Best Suited For
For customers requiring a black fence paint pallet quantity, StudX Black is designed for properly prepared, receptive timber and is well suited to:
- Post-and-rail fencing
- Paddock and boundary fencing
- Equine and rural property fencing
- Adequately weathered new softwood fencing
- Well-weathered, previously uncoated timber
- Suitable existing timber fencing that is sound, properly prepared and receptive to coating
Preparing New Timber
New timber must be adequately weathered before applying StudX.
As a general guide, new softwood such as treated pine should be allowed to weather for a
minimum of 4–6 weeks before coating.
Timber species, treatment, weather and seasonal conditions can all affect the required
weathering period. Hardwoods generally require longer weathering.
A simple water bead test can help determine whether the timber is receptive.
Apply a small amount of clean water to the surface. If it is readily absorbed into the timber,
the surface is generally receptive to a water-based coating. If the water beads or remains on
the surface, further weathering or preparation may be required.
Existing Fencing
Existing fencing should be clean, dry, sound and free from dirt, contaminants and loose
or failing coatings before painting. Well-weathered uncoated timber should be checked
for receptiveness using the water bead test. If your fence has previously been coated and you
are unsure which StudX finish is most suitable, please refer to our application information
or contact us for advice before proceeding.
Application
StudX Black may be applied by airless spray, brush or roller. For larger fencing
projects, airless spraying is recommended for fast and efficient application.

CribX Protection
StudX Black contains CribX, a non-toxic additive designed to discourage horses
from cribbing and chewing painted timber. This makes StudX particularly well suited to equine
fencing where maintaining the appearance and condition of timber fencing is important.
How Much StudX Will I Need?
Fence length, rail configuration, timber profile, surface condition and application method
can all affect paint usage. Use our StudX Coverage Calculator to estimate the quantity required
